In recent years, environmental sustainability has become a hot topic and has resulted in a serious rethink of the current production and consumption methods.
The clothing sector is responsible for 10% of the global greenhouse gas emissions and is the 2nd most polluting industry in the world. The advent of fast fashion has fostered an overproduction and growing consumption of low-cost garments that are worn for a short period of time, before being thrown away. In addition to the massive use of water and toxic chemicals, the fast fashion supply chain generates tonnes of disposable textile waste each year: according to the United Nations, only 1% of clothing is recycled, whilst 85% of garments end up in landfills.
Our family is very sensitive to these issues and has decided to adopt an eco-sustainable approach to minimise our production chain’s impact on the environment. As a result, we at Löwenweiss have decided to entrust the production of our slippers to master artisans, instead of mass production, and to use natural, eco-friendly materials.
All of our wool felt house shoes are made with 50% regenerated fibres, obtained from recycled clothing. As a result of our expert processing method, the fibres extracted from old clothes have the same appearance as freshly shorn wool and are even softer than traditional felt.
The decision to entrust the production to master artisans is also in keeping with the principles of environmental sustainability. On the one hand, it allows us to create high-quality, durable slippers that won’t have to be thrown away after just a few years of use. As each shoe is painstakingly and expertly hand-crafted, we are able to offer a unique product that embodies the value of an ancient tradition, which has been passed down from generation to generation. On the other hand, it enables us to exclusively use natural, non-polluting materials. Wool, latex, rubber, cork and vanilla essence: the raw materials that make the Löwenweiss slippers warm, comfortable and fragrant.
Even the product packaging - the shoe boxes and tags - are made entirely from recycled cardboard and no plastic is used whatsoever.
These choices may seem like “a drop in the ocean” to some people, but we are convinced that change can be brought about with everyone's concrete actions. Companies must act for the common good, instead of just for profit, and individuals can reward those who show greater attention to the world around us, by means of their consumption decisions.
